Native to Japan, China and Taiwan, Pieris japonica belongs to the Ericaceae family, the same as rhododendrons and heathers. This variety, 'Little Heath', is a compact selection particularly appreciated for its small size and the beauty of its variegated foliage.

This evergreen shrub has small leaves with creamy margins and greenish tones in the center. The new foliage appears in shades of reddish-pink, creating a charming contrast with the more mature leaves. In spring, it produces delicate white, bell-shaped flowers, which are grouped in hanging clusters, reminiscent of lily of the valley.

Slow-growing and compact, Pieris japonica 'Little Heath' grows to around 60cm tall and wide, making it an excellent choice for small spaces and for those looking for a low-maintenance ornamental shrub. It prefers acidic, well-drained soils and thrives best in partial shade or filtered light, making it ideal for shaded gardens or as a feature plant in window boxes. It is best planted in a location where it receives indirect sunlight or morning sun and afternoon shade, especially if you live in a hot climate.

In addition to its aesthetic value, this plant is extremely hardy, withstanding low temperatures and maintaining its charm throughout the year. It can be used to create textures and contrasts in compositions with other acidophilic plants, such as azaleas and rhododendrons, or simply as a sophisticated element in a more structured garden.

Pieris 'Little Heath' does not require intensive pruning, just occasional tidying to remove dead leaves and maintain its compact shape. Its hardiness and enduring beauty make it a perfect choice for those who want an elegant, easy-care garden.

Luminosity

Prefers environments with lots of light but without direct sunlight.

Watering

The name Pieris has Greek origins and is associated with the Pierides, a group of nine muses from Greek mythology linked to poetry and the arts. The name was chosen due to the elegance and delicacy of the plant.
