Marimo

Aegagropila linnaei is actually an algae that originates from freshwater lakes and rivers, mainly in Japan, although it can also be found in some Nordic countries. The area around Lake Akan, located in the Hokkaido region, is considered a sacred habitat for the Marimos, where they thrive and multiply.

Marimo formation is a gradual process, taking years for a small ball of algae to fully develop. The lakes and rivers where Marimos are found are characterized by clear, nutrient-rich waters. The strands of algae begin to clump together and form small green balls, which eventually turn into the adorable Marimos.

Legend has it that the daughter of a tribal chief, in love with a commoner, ran away with her love, an escape that ended with the death of both in Lake Akan, and it is said that their hearts were transformed into Marimo balls. That is why this seaweed is also known as the Love Plant and is used as a symbol of love, affection and good luck.
