About Bonsai Zanthoxylum

This bonsai tree is surprising for several reasons: it has delicate, bright green compound leaves and an elegant branched structure that becomes more beautiful with time. In summer, it can even produce small, discreet flowers, followed by fruits that open to reveal the seeds — the famous Sichuan pepper, used in Asian cuisine.

The leaves and stem release a fresh, slightly spicy aroma when touched, making this bonsai a unique sensory experience. It is a deciduous species, meaning that it loses its leaves in autumn and goes dormant in winter, before sprouting new leaves in spring.

It likes to be outdoors, in a bright place sheltered from strong winds, although it can also adapt to well-lit interiors. With regular watering, fertilization during the growing season and some patience with pruning and wiring, this bonsai becomes a living piece full of character.

Despite being called pepper, Zanthoxylum piperitum is not in the same family as black pepper. Its dried fruits are used in Japanese and Chinese cuisine to give it a spicy and slightly numbing flavor — but be careful, the fruits of the bonsai should only be used if you know exactly how to care for and prepare the plant for consumption.
