About Red Barberry

Originating from Japan, Berberis thunbergii is a species of deciduous shrub widely cultivated throughout the world due to its hardiness and ornamental value. The cultivar 'Dart's Red Lady' stands out for its small, reddish leaves and compact shape, making it ideal for delimiting paths, forming natural borders or simply standing out as a point of colour in a garden or balcony.

During spring, the foliage appears vibrant red, evolving to a deep purple in summer and maintaining visual interest until autumn. It produces small, inconspicuous yellow flowers in spring, followed by red berries in autumn, which attract birds and add ornamental value.

In addition to its enormous aesthetic value, this plant helps to create more natural, colorful and lively environments during the brightest months of the year. Its berries feed birds, promoting local biodiversity. Its compact growth and resistance make it an excellent choice for those who want beauty with little maintenance.

'Dart's Red Lady' is a very hardy plant, tolerant to cold, wind and pruning. It prefers full sun or partial shade and adapts well to various types of soil, as long as it is well drained. It can be used alone or combined with other plants to create dynamic compositions.

Tip

Did you know that, in addition to being ornamental, Berberis has also been used in defensive gardening? Due to its thorns, it is traditionally planted in hedges to prevent the passage of animals or people – a beautiful natural barrier!

Sizes Guide

Plant sizes are shown as total plant height | growing pot diameter.

This means the total height of the plant, from the base of the growing pot to the longest or highest point of the foliage | the diameter of the growing pot measured at the top rim.

Thus, this measurement includes the roots and substrate, as well as the height or length of the plant.
