Build your own living and flowering garden

When we put a plant in the ground, we know that what follows will not entirely belong to us. The plant will grow at its own pace, the seasons will shape it, and the sun and rain will do their work.

A lively, flowering garden can be enjoyed by passers-by, be a shelter for a bird, a place where a bee finds food, or a moment of calm at the weekend after intense days of work. This place starts in the hands of those who plant it, but rarely ends with them. It quickly comes to belong to the wind, the animals, the seasons, and all the eyes that appreciate it!

Is this spring when you start bringing life to your outdoor space? If you think of your garden as a shared space, you can choose plants with different aesthetic and ecological functions!

Before planting

Before choosing the species that will be part of your garden, it's worth taking a close look. Map and identify where the sun shines directly, where the shade remains, and where the light changes more subtly throughout the hours. This reading of the terrain will be one of the most important decisions in the entire process, don't neglect it!

If you look down, the soil also tells a story. Some soil is heavier, able to retain water for longer, and some is looser, allowing water to drain more easily. At this point, there's no need to overcomplicate things; just observe how it behaves after rain, how it reacts when touched, and how it dries in the following days.

A garden with its own rhythm

The diversity of a garden helps create a sense of constant life. Lower plants, such as Heather, succulents and aromatics, alongside more structured ones, such as the Rhododendron Masson, Prunus or Cedars, different foliage contrasting with each other, small groups of plants repeating here and there instead of isolated elements. Plants adapted to the local climate are often more resistant and less demanding for the caretaker. If you are just starting, bet on these!

Attract pollinators and help the environment

A truly living garden is also measured by what we see when we get closer. And bees, butterflies, and other pollinators don't just appear by chance! They need accessible flowers, easy-to-reach pollen, and continuity throughout the seasons. When that exists, the garden changes completely!

If you want to contribute to the health of the planet and ensure these visits in your garden, start by choosing the right plants! Jasmine, Polygala and Ceanothus are three great options: they provide nectar, attract bees and butterflies, and make any outdoor space more vibrant.

To care is to continue to observe

A garden is never finished; it is built and accompanied throughout the seasons and years. There will be plants that adapt better than expected and others that do not grow healthily or find their place at all. Here, various trial-and-error experiences are part of the process, don't be discouraged!

Caring for a garden will challenge you to adjust, observe, and intervene when it makes sense, as it is a living and constantly changing personal project. In the end, you will be building a place that will evolve with you, change with the seasons, and welcome much more life than you could imagine. At Bioma Plants, we ensure that every plant sent is of superior quality, carefully cleaned and inspected, and we pack everything securely so it arrives perfect at your space.
