Houseplants are a great way to add life, color, and texture to your home. In addition to being aesthetically pleasing, they can improve air quality, reduce stress, and even increase productivity. But if you’re new to gardening, you might be wondering: Which houseplants are easy to care for?
In general, plants are easy to care for if their characteristics and needs are respected when choosing the plant, according to some key factors:
- Consider the amount of sunlight your home gets: Some plants need a lot of direct sunlight, like cacti and succulents, while others prefer partial or full shade, like ferns and philodendrons.
- Think about how much time you have to care for your plants: some plants need to be watered and fertilized frequently, like orchids, while others are more tolerant of neglect, like scindapsus and sansevierias.
- Choose plants that are suitable for the size of your home: if you have little space, look for compact plants that don't grow too much or that grow vertically.
However, some plants stand out for their versatility and functionality. They are ideal for beginners because they require very little effort and tolerate some "neglect". Here are some examples:
Sansevieria laurentii (Sword of St. George)
This is a plant that looks great anywhere, thanks to its slender and elegant appearance. It is probably the best-known species of the Sansevieria genus. It adapts perfectly to places with reduced light and is extremely easy to care for!
In addition to being a great decorative element, Sansevieria laurentii is also an excellent air purifier, effectively removing toxins that are harmful to health.
It is a plant that does not require much maintenance and as such is the ideal option for beginners!
Scindapsus N'Joy
Even if you don't know how to pronounce its baptismal name, N'Joy immediately stands out due to its bright colors and lush appearance.
This little plant is perfect for keeping on a windowsill, as its main need is to absorb plenty of sunlight to grow healthily. Just remember to water it occasionally, when the substrate is dry.
Euphorbia acrurensis
It is a succulent with an elegant structure that originates from the African continent and has a great taste for good sunlight. For this reason, it is an ideal plant to be placed near a window or in another place with plenty of light. It is easy to maintain and very drought tolerant, an excellent element that, in addition to decorating closed spaces, also transmits lots of light and a tropical feel!
